His coaches and friends could attest that Cade McNown was a deep thinker ever since. He would study his lessons and history while training rigorously for his passion. He could quote his favorite zen masters, philosophers, thinkers and authors if the conversation would warrant it. Take for example, during his post-Draft interview he was asked about his chances, he candidly answered the question with two liners filled with reference to history. That was an awesome moment.

Back in his days at UCLA, Coach Toledo related how exasperated Cade McNown was after the student newspaper hailed his passing for two touchdowns beating the undefeated Arizona with the headline, “UCLA Wins Despite McNone”. He concluded that it was a negative response to a heroic feat. Cade McNown has gone through a lot of internal wars from collegiate football to Chicago Bears. And Toledo was saddened that McNown’s two years as a pro had been plagued with injuries.

During the 2000 preseason, Jim Miller was injured and Cade McNown was named the starter over Shane Matthews. The team’s coordination and communication had been challenging most of the time in the next games of the Bears. He suffered a shoulder injury during the seventh game against Philadelphia and was replaced by Miller. Unfortunately, Miller was also hit by injury to be substituted by Matthews. McNown had tried to mount a comeback but still pressed by shoulder pains. He did not see action for the remaining games.  His career with Chicago Bears was cut-short as he was traded to the Miami Dolphins the following season.
